Ooni Karu 2 Pro: a 16-inch wood fire, and a lot of oven to move

Buy the Karu 2 Pro if you want two things at once: a 16-inch pizza and a real wood or charcoal fire. Of the seven ovens on Ooni’s own comparison chart, it is the only one that does both, and its stone is 2.4 times the area of the Karu 2’s. Do not buy it as a portable oven. Ooni’s own chart puts it at 60 lb. Amazon will not take it back, and if you only want 16 inches, the gas-only Koda 16 has a far longer review record.

What the Karu 2 Pro is, from its own listing

The Pro is the largest of Ooni’s three multi-fuel Karu ovens on Amazon. The Karu 12 and the Karu 2 both take a 12-inch pizza on a 13 by 13 inch stone. The Pro takes a 16-inch pizza, and the chart Ooni prints on the listing gives its stone as 16.7 by 24.5 inches. The description calls that a “17″ wide cooking area”. The two figures agree.

It burns wood or charcoal straight out of the box. Gas is an option, but only with what the listing calls the “Ooni Karu 2 Pro Gas Burner – sold separately”. That is a named, model-specific burner, not a generic one, and this site has no listing for it, so we cannot give you its price. Find out before you order the oven if you think you will want gas on weeknights.

The rest of the upgrade over the Karu 12 is the same one the Karu 2 makes: a full glass door (Ooni calls it ViewFlame), a fully insulated body and a mounted digital thermometer that reads in °F or °C. The Pro adds what a bullet calls “smart cooking functionality with the new Ooni Connect app”. The listing says nothing more about what the app does or how the thermometer is powered, so neither do we.

The heat claim is the same as every Karu: 950 °F in 15 minutes, from a feature bullet, with a 60-second pizza at the top end. There is no temperature field in the spec table. Ooni’s chart gives a range of 210 to 950 °F, which is identical for the Karu 12, the Karu 2 and the Pro. You are not paying for a hotter oven. You are paying for a bigger one.

Karu 12169 sq inKaru 2169 sq inKaru 2 Pro409 sq in
Circle AREA is proportional to each oven's stone area, from the stone sizes in Ooni's own comparison chart on the Karu 2 Pro listing, read 20 October 2026: 13 × 13 in for the Karu 12 and Karu 2, 16.7 × 24.5 in for the Pro. The Pro's stone is 2.4 times the size. Stone thickness is not published for any of them.

The listing gives two weights, 26 lb apart

This is the one number on the Pro’s listing a buyer most needs, and it is stated two ways. The Item Weight field says 15.3 kg, which is about 33.7 lb. Ooni’s comparison chart, printed further down the same listing, says 60 lb. That is a gap of about 26 lb.

The Karu 2’s listing has the same 15.3 kg in its weight field, and there it agrees with the chart, which gives the Karu 2 as 34.17 lb. So the 12-inch oven’s two figures match, and the 16-inch oven’s field carries almost exactly the 12-inch oven’s weight. We cannot weigh it and will not pick one. What we can say is that the chart is internally consistent: a much larger stone, a larger body and a figure nearly twice the Karu 2’s. Plan for the heavier number.

That matters for where the oven lives. The Karu 12 is 26.5 lb on the same chart, light enough to lift onto a table and put away. A 60 lb oven that is 32 × 19.6 × 33 in unboxed is something you set up on a table or a stand and leave there. The spec table has an Additional Features field that reads “Portable”. None of the Pro’s feature bullets claims portability, which is the more honest of the two.

The Karu 2 Pro beside the Karu 2, the Karu 12 and the gas-only Koda 16, from this site's product snapshot of 29 August 2026. Prices, ratings, review counts and sales badges are Amazon's own and they move: the Pro showed 4.4★ from 150 ratings in that snapshot and 4.4★ from 157 on 20 October 2026. Max temp reads "Not stated" for the Karu 2 and the Pro because neither listing has a temperature field; both bullets claim 950 °F. The fuel row lists gas for every Karu because the listings do, not because a burner is in the box. The power row is a listing artefact.

What its owners report

The Pro has 157 Amazon ratings at 4.4 stars, on one listing with no colour or size variations, so the count belongs to this oven alone. It was 150 at the same average on 29 August 2026. That is a small record for an oven at the top of the range. The Ooni Koda 16, the other 16-inch oven here, shows 1,254 in the same snapshot.

Amazon’s review topics for the Pro were last returned on 29 August 2026. Both reads this site made on 20 October 2026 came back with the topic lists empty. That is what the scrape returned, not evidence that Amazon dropped them, so the themes below are the August read, dated as such.

What buyers report — Ooni Karu 2 Propatterns across 150 Amazon reviews · 4.4★ · read 29 August 2026
  • Praised: Performance is the largest topic by a distance: 41 mentions, 37 positive and 4 negative. Amazon's summary says owners find it delivers restaurant-worthy results. — the people who bought it mostly like what comes out of it
  • Mixed: Heating time is mixed, 9 positive to 5 negative. Amazon's summary says some owners find it cooks fast while others say it takes a long time to heat up. — the 15-minute claim is a claim, and a wood fire's warm-up depends on the fire
  • Mixed: Value for money splits exactly evenly, 6 positive and 6 negative, and Amazon's summary says some owners consider it overpriced. — on the most expensive Karu, half the owners who raise price are not convinced
  • Mixed: Versatility is 3 to 2. Across all five topics there are 17 negative mentions out of 82, about 21%. — a corpus this small moves when a handful of owners post

Amazon's topic data for ASIN B0DLH28V1D, read 29 August 2026: five topics, 82 total mentions, from 150 ratings. Two reads on 20 October 2026 (157 ratings) returned no topic data. Totals are computed as positive plus negative rather than read from Amazon's mentions field, which breaks on totals of a thousand or more; none is close here. Themes summarise patterns across the public corpus and quote nothing from an individual review. This site does not cook on these ovens.

The least happy corpus of the three Karus

Star averages flatten the difference. Amazon shows the Karu 12 at 4.6, the Karu 2 at 4.5 and the Pro at 4.4 in the snapshot, which looks like a gentle slope. The topic counts from the same day are steeper. About 21% of the Pro’s topic mentions are negative, against roughly 13% for the Karu 2 and 15% for the Karu 12. Eleven of the Pro’s 17 negative mentions sit in two topics: value for money and heating time.

Read that carefully. It is 82 mentions, and Amazon chooses which topics to show. It is not a defect rate and it says nothing about the oven failing. What it says is that the owners of the most expensive Karu are the ones most likely to raise price as a complaint, which is a fair warning about expectations rather than about the oven.

Share of Amazon review-topic mentions that are negative, from each listing's topic data read 29 August 2026: Karu 2 12 of 90, Karu 12 39 of 265, Karu 2 Pro 17 of 82. Circle diameter tracks the percentage. Amazon chooses the topics, and the corpora differ in size by three to one, so this is a direction, not a measurement.

Where the listing contradicts itself

Beyond the weight, read directly from Amazon on 20 October 2026:

Fuel. The Fuel Type field says wood, and nothing else. The bullets say wood or charcoal, and gas with the separate burner. Ooni’s chart says “Wood & Gas (adaptor required)”. All three are compatible once you read the bullet, but the field alone undersells it.

Where it goes. The Installation Type field reads “Countertop”, and Amazon files the Pro under Countertop Pizza Ovens in Kitchen & Dining, while the Karu 2 sits under Outdoor Ovens in Patio, Lawn & Garden. That is Amazon’s filing, not a placement claim. Ooni’s own chart says outdoors only. The Pro burns wood, charcoal or propane, all of which produce carbon monoxide. It belongs outdoors in open air: never in a kitchen, a garage, a tent, an enclosed porch or under a covered roof.

Electrical figures on a fire. Wattage reads 1 kW and Voltage reads 1 volt. The listing names no power supply anywhere else, and the fuel it describes is solid fuel or gas. Both figures are ignored here.

Capacity. The Capacity field reads 12 cubic centimetres, about the volume of a sugar cube. It is not a usable figure.

Warranty, which has changed. When this site first read the listing on 29 August 2026 there was no warranty field, and two of our guides said so. On 20 October 2026 the Warranty Description field reads “1 year as standard”. Ooni’s other listings describe a longer extension on registration; this one does not mention it, so check Ooni’s terms rather than assume it applies.

The Karu 2 Pro's own listing (ASIN B0DLH28V1D, model UU-P2EE00), read from Amazon on 20 October 2026. Each cell prints what the listing says, including where its fields and Ooni's chart in the description disagree. The listing publishes no stone thickness and no dimensions field; the footprint is the chart's unboxed size.

You cannot return it, and neither the box nor the price is complete

Amazon marks the Pro non-returnable: “Transportation of this item is subject to hazardous materials regulation.” The Karu 2 carries the same notice. On an oven with 157 ratings, that removes the usual way to manage the risk of a thin record.

The box is generous: the description lists the oven body, glass door, cordierite stones, chimney and cap, burner tray and grate, a Draft Defender plate, a fuel hatch and the digital thermometer. It also says plainly that a pizza peel is “essential” and “not included”. A 16-inch pizza wants a peel at least that wide, and the wooden vs metal peel comparison covers what to look for. Add the gas burner if you want gas, and a stand or a table that takes 60 lb.

What it gives up

Portability. On Ooni’s own figures it is more than twice the Karu 12’s weight. It is a garden oven.

Heat. Nothing over the cheaper Karus. The same 950 °F claim, the same 15-minute preheat claim, the same chart range.

A safety net. No returns and 157 ratings. The warranty field now says one year.

Convenience on gas. The burner is extra, model-specific and not on this site. If you expect to cook on gas most nights, a gas oven with the regulator and hose in the box is simpler, and the gas vs wood-fired comparison is the place to decide whether you want fire at all.

Who should buy something else

Anyone who wants 16 inches more than they want wood. The Ooni Koda 16 is gas only, includes its hose and regulator, and carries 1,254 ratings at 4.6 in our snapshot. Its full review covers what that corpus says, including its own complaints.

Anyone who wants wood and is happy at 12 inches. The Ooni Karu 12 makes the same heat claim, is the lightest Karu on Ooni’s chart and has the deepest review record of the three. The Karu 2 adds the glass door and thermometer at the same 12 inches, if those are what draw you to the Pro.

Anyone still choosing a type of oven. Ooni Karu vs Koda lays out multi-fuel against gas-only across five ovens, and the wood-fired pizza oven guide compares the Pro with the other ovens here that take wood.

Anyone without outdoor space. This is a combustion oven and is not an option indoors. The electric pizza oven guide covers the plug-in ovens, which burn nothing.

Who is left is a specific buyer: someone feeding several people from a fixed spot in the garden, who wants the wood fire as well as the size, and who accepts a 60 lb oven they cannot send back. For that buyer the Karu 2 Pro is the only oven on Ooni’s current chart that does both jobs. Anyone who wants just one of them has a cheaper or better-documented option above.

Where this leaves you

If you want a 16-inch oven that burns wood

  • A 16.7 × 24.5 in stone by Ooni's chart, 2.4 times the Karu 2's.
  • Wood or charcoal out of the box; gas with a Karu 2 Pro Gas Burner, sold separately.
  • 950 °F claimed in a bullet, the same as the cheaper Karus. No temperature field.
  • Weight: 15.3 kg in the field, 60 lb in Ooni's own chart. Plan for the heavier one.
  • 157 ratings at 4.4★. Non-returnable. Warranty field: "1 year as standard".
